Last Revised Date: 02/25/2020 The purpose of volunteers in a school program is to improve the quality of instruction by assisting teachers in the learning process.
The State Board of Education encourages local boards of education to involve the services of volunteers. Therefore, School of the Osage Board of Education supports the idea that volunteers are a part of the educational team and should be utilized in the district’s programs.
The superintendent or designee will create appropriate procedures for attracting, screening and training volunteers. The district will conduct screening and criminal background checks on volunteers as required by law and policy GBEBC before any volunteer is placed in a position where he or she will be left alone with a student or have access to student education records.
Volunteering in the district is a privilege, not a right. The district may decline the services of any volunteer for any legal reason. All information collected on volunteers will be considered confidential to the extent allowed by law and will be used only to protect students or minimize disruption to the educational environment.
Volunteers in School of the Osage’s programs should have a general understanding of the school’s philosophy and objectives of education. Assignment of duties/responsibilities shall be made by the building principal and each volunteer may be assigned to any teacher or in any classroom other than that in which the volunteer has a child. Exceptions will be made for a principal-approved special learning activity.
Volunteers shall maintain the same confidentiality standards expected of certificated personnel and exhibit the ethical behaviors of a professional. Volunteers shall not have access to confidential student files or records.
Volunteers shall be used in addition to the standards for professional personnel as stipulated in the Missouri School Improvement Program handbook. Volunteers shall not be used as substitutes unless they are qualified according to Missouri’s regulations for substitute teachers and are paid substitute wages.
